Dachshunds

Faithful, versatile and good tempered.

Dachshunds Dig, Dachshunds are Stubborn, Dachshunds have large appetites.

Never let yourself forget that a Dachshund albeit small is a mighty hound at heart. Although they can be trying at times and have their favourite party tricks as rolling in whatever smells bad and pretending to be deaf when you want them to recall, they are faithfully loyal comedians that steal your heart.

Feeding

Dachshunds more often than not have very good appetites.

A overweight Dachshunds is an unhealthy one and can lead to problems with their heart, backs, and legs. A Dachshund ideal weight should be from 10-11lbs. Always remember to deduct any treats given from their daily meal.

our puppies are reared on a variety of food such as  Royal Canin biscuits, butchers puppy meat, raw tripe, chicken, scrambled egg, fish and rice pudding. Variations of these will be giving at each meal, biscuits can be dry or wet (soaked in water) and both can be alone or have some tinned meat or tripe mixed in.

Over time the amount of meals per day can be reduced.   Always make sure your puppy has access to fresh clean water at each meal.

If your puppy doesn’t eat what you put down to it we recommend leaving it until they do. They will eat when they are hungry, do not try and tempt with ‘steak’ etc otherwise you will never get them back to dog food. Our Adults get fed once a day biscuits with either; raw tripe, chicken, fish, salmon.

Care

The long haired Dachshund needs a weekly brush and a comb, a Bath monthly. They require their feet trimmed - Just pick up the hair between the toes and trim the excess, Trim underneath to reveal the pad.

For the ears use a baby wipe carefully wipe the inner to stop the build up of wax. To clean your puppy’s teeth use a finger Brush and some doggy toothpaste will keep your dogs teeth clean. Treats for teeth are high in fat and can easily add weight to your puppy/adult. Your puppy will already be used to these we highly recommend that you continue a routine of care with your puppy.

Training

Dachshunds were developed to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals, they have also been used to track wounded deer and hunt prairie dogs. If correct training is given Dachshunds can also excel at agility, obedience and fly ball. Dachshunds have a bad reputation of being yappy this can be easily stopped through a good routine and discipline. If they know they can get their own way they will always do it.

They have the instinct to dig and will need a secure garden a good rule to follow when securing a garden is if there is a hole their nose can get through they will get out.

Picking up your puppy

When picking up your puppy always remember to support the bottom so there is not too much pressure on the puppies back and DO NOT put your hands between their front legs. Hold the puppy securely at all times.

Exercise

Mini longhaired Dachshunds do not require concentrated exercise. They will walk as long or as far as you want them too. Make sure you have a secure collar and lead, we do not recommend harnesses as they can cause back problems, extendable leads can be good to train you dog to recall but are not suitable walking leads. The breeder will be able to advise you the best lead to use.

Remember they are hounds and just because they are small doesn’t mean they do not need exercise and although breed can give an indication of the dog's energy level, the final judgement must be made on the individual dog's needs. A good rule of thumb is 5 minutes from 6months old then add 5minutes per month..

Leaving alone

We advise that you crate/box your puppy at night or when you have to leave them for a short while. This also minimised the risk of chewing and soiled areas. Your puppy will develop better habits through this and will be less lightly to suffer from separation anxiety. A crate or box is also strongly recommended for car travel.

Toilet Training

By nature a dog will not soil in its own bed, by establishing their bed either in a crate of a pet carrier they will try to avoid elimination whenever they are in there and will tend to hold it will you take them out.

Set up a schedule for you and your dog to stick to everyday and everyday feed your dog the same amount of food and regular the amount of water that they have access to. If you stick to this they will relieve themselves at the same time of day, also by using the command such as 'pee pee' or 'potty' and rewarding them when they do it correctly the will soon associate with the command and the training will be successful.
